| If someone asked me, "Where's Coastal Winds?" I would tell you, "It's right there on Port Isabel's main street (Queen Isabella Blvd.) over by the Museum. You know, the store that had all those great, carved pelican statues on their front sidewalk." If you've lived here for awhile and didn't know the name, chances are, you would remember those simplistic yet beautiful, carved wood, white pelicans; they are, or shall we say "were" one of the many unique items you could find in this fascinating gift store. (The pelicans sold very quickly. Owners, Karen and Paul Wentzel, hope to have more soon.)
Being among the budget-challenged these days, I try to avoid any place that houses original art, unique carvings, hand-made jewelry or unusual home décor items that appear to be one-of-a-kind finds that you won't find in a mall, because I know my limits and, alas, food comes before art. Now don't get me wrong, Coastal Winds does not cater to the rich and famous, they just make you feel that way. I could not believe the number of items that caught my eye that had a price tag of under $10. And the quality (not to mention quantity) of what you will find under $20 is unbelievable. Karen and Paul have been in business in Port Isabel for the past four years. After retiring from a maquilladora in Saltillo, Mexico, the Wentzels decided to make Port Isabel home. During the time that they lived and worked in Mexico, the Wentzels would spend vacation time here, so it came natural to them after retiring to make Port Isabel their home. Besides, their boat was already here. Where else could they go? In the four years that Karen and Paul have owned their Coastal Winds store, they have developed a loyal following of both tourists and local clientele. what do those locals buy? A little bit of everything. Gifts for family, items for their homes and things to decorate rental properties. What keeps people coming back is not just the wonderful service, but the unique items that the Wentzels have carefully chosen such as jewelry from Peru and Brazil, beautiful carvings from Indonesia, a year-round Christmas display, items focusing on our eco-tourism industry such as binoculars, and birding books from the Audubon society. You will also find original art from local artists that Paul will custom frame just for you and your home décor. Using Larson-Juhl frames (which are featured on decorating shows on the Home Decorating channels and the Fine Living Channel), Paul will give your art a life all its own. You can frame pictures purchased at Coastal Winds or the piece you have had stored under your bed waiting for the right time. Well, the time is now; the location is close to home, their prices are down to earth and the quality of work is out of this world. But don't believe me, go see for yourself. Coastal Winds has something for everyone, no matter what your budget is. Coastal Winds is located at 406 Queen Isabella Blvd. in Port Isabel. They are open 7 days a week, Mon-Sat, 10 am to 6 pm and Sun 12-5. During the month of August 2005 all framing will be discounted 20%.
